VIA/S3G graphic card, 64MB performs like 16 MB? King Kong don't like.....

Recommended Posts

Recently bought King Kong. Won't run right. It seems that the only games my video card can handle are for 16MB cards or less, when mine is supposed to be 64MB. Driver's all updated, still doesn't work. Game says 1 ghz cpu min. and I have 1.8 AMD, yet when it crashes the VM drive at very beginning, cpu usage is at 100%, first I've ever seen it that high. No sense in getting new video card if cpu is problem. Is there any way to improve the performance of the VIA graphics card or some other way to tell which one might be the problem?

Windows xp home ed ser pk 2

Gateway T3101

AMD Sempron 3100+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.8GHz

190MB

Page File 461MB

Direct X 9.0c

VIA/S3G Unichrome pro IGP internal graphics card

64MB display memory (supposedly)

Yes, put a real graphics card in there. Complaining that your Via/S3 integrated graphics card does not perform well is like complaining that your black and white TV doesn't show color.

Agreed.

Also the reason that your system is showing only 190mb (192?) of RAM instead of 256mb is because the graphics card is "sharing" that memory.

If you want to play up-to-date games you will probrably need more memory and a new GPU.

I have a similer machine but payed £30(uk) extra for a radeon 9250 128mb card which (although not a great card) does the job.

You have an AGP slot use it, It doesn't even have to be very expensive.

ty, been looking at new cards, seems you can pay anything from $50 to $350 for one. But appreciate info on card I have. Sorta figured it was a dud. Think I might get an ATI. A friend says I can install myself, that he'd shoot me if I paid Circuit City $40 (their installation fee). Some of the boxes say they come with instructions. Don't know that King Kong is worth it, but it wasn't cheap and hate to write it off...
