Motherboard Upgrade

Ok, I am looking to upgrade an older PC's motherboard and am just making 100% sure that it is compatible and that it will work. Here is what I have:

 

Intel Celeron 2.8ghz 533mhz fsb, socket 478

Crucial PC2700 333mhz (2x512mb)DDR memory (Not Dual Channel)

2 IDE HDD: 120GB Western Digital (Running OS) 40GB Seagate(backup) No Raid format

Ultra 500Watt X-Connect PSU

Windows XP Home

Will add video card when it is up and running

Upgrade Mobo

Can anyone verify that everything is compatible? I tried to install the mobo once before and was left with no video output, so I RMA'ed that old one and a new one is on the way. I just want to make sure that nothing is incompatible (I've looked over everything many times, but could have missed something)

Note: This PC was originally an eMachines but the only thing left as stock will be the processor and the Windows XP. eMachines OK'ed the upgrade and sent me an XP CD-Key if I need it during install.

Should it work? The previous attempt was tried with other memory sticks, processor, and any variations of the two

Everything should work just fine except for the RAM. The motherboard supports up to PC3200 and your memory is PC2700. It may work just fine, but I would look into a memory upgrade, especially considering how cheap memory is at the moment.

Need help with migration also.

 

I am finalizing my plans to migrate from an Intel Board to AMD64 processor, with all new everything, including drives. Ideally, I would like to clone the entire OS to the new drive, to save work.

 

First time I tried to clone the Intel based drive to the new machine using Maxtor Clone from MaxBlast 4, it died with an unknown error.

 

Next time, I tried to clone from the Intel machine drive to the AMD64 machine using Norton Ghost. After the clone, I could not boot into the OS. I got stuck at the screen that gives you options for

Boot in Safe Mode

Boot in Save Mode with networking

Boot Windows Normally. (ect...)

 

No matter what selection I made, I kept coming back to that same screen.

 

Am I on the right track if I do the following:

1. To preserve the data on my current machine, clone XP to a new drive on the Intel Processor.

2. Set up the cloned drive as the primary drive.

3. Go into add/remove programs and remove all drivers for sound cards, intel processors, network and video.

4. Move the Intel "cleansed drive" to the AMD machine, and clone that drive to the new machine.

5. If I get a successful boot, then add drivers for Mobo, video, USB, ect.

 

BTW, I am not a glutton for punishment. I just have some software that I want to keep in place, that I don't have the installation disks for, like printers and scanners, plus I want to keep all of my settings for email and browsing passwords in place, because I don't remember all the passwords and user ids I put in place for various sites.

 

Am I missing something, or am I on the right track?
