cheryl152 0 Posted October 22, 2006 Hello, My mom has an IBM A30 laptop and the sound does not seem to be working any longer. The speakers were properly connected, I removed them and attached them to my PC and they worked fine. But when I reconnect them to the laptop, there is no sound. Can anyone assist with next steps in troubleshooting or repairing? Novice hardware tech here, so easy to follow instructions would be appreciated! Thanks! Cheryl Share this post Link to post
jmmijo 1 Posted October 23, 2006 First I would reboot the machine and check if the notebook has a BIOS Setup option, normally I see the F2 key for laptops. Once inside the BIOS settings, look for the Integrated Peripherals section and verifiy that the onboard SOUND sometimes called AC97 Sound is enabled. If so, then save and exit the BIOS and boot into SAFE MODE for your OS, usually the F5 key during the initial boot phase. Now check the Device Manager and verify if the drivers are installed for the sound device installed on that notebook, check the manufacturers website for tech specs and what is installed. Commonly used AC97 chipsets are Realtek, C-Media, Analog Devices and Sigmatel. Once you can verify if this driver is installed, make sure it's not installed more then once and/or other types of AC97 drivers are installed from a different manafacturer. You should be able to uninstall these even in SAFE MODE and then reboot the machine back into normal mode. There you should d/l and install the latest drivers from either IBM/Lenovo's website or from the OEM that makes the sound chipset. Share this post Link to post
Evie210 0 Posted October 23, 2006 I hope the instructions from jmmijo work to resolve the issue. But if they don't, try headphones instead of speakers. My IMB Thinkpad all of sudden refused to co-operate with my speakers. Out of desperation, I plugged in headphones, and there was sound. May or may not work, but worth a try. Also, have you checked sound properties, to make sure nothing is muted? Share this post Link to post
