I hope you all had a good weekend. Regardless of whether you're using a PC as a Home Theatre system or not, video playback is becoming an ever-more important part of the average system, especially with BD-ROM drives available at pretty reasonable prices and DVD-ROM drives on sale for next to nothing. Coupled with this, we've seen plenty of effort being put into video decoding via GPU acceleration from both ATI and NVIDIA, with a focus on both performance and picture quality. Thus, we've taken a look at both of these aspects of video playback in the current marketplace, seeing what both major graphics IHVs have to offer consumers.

While a CPU alone will struggle to handle High Definition content recorded in 1080p, modern GPUs are ideally designed and placed to take most of that workload away from the CPU, which means that the latest generations of graphics boards from both NVIDIA and AMD's ATI graphics division are capable of accelerating most if not all of a High Definition video stream."
