news 28 Posted April 17, 2008 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 ===================================================================== Red Hat Security Advisory Synopsis: Important: poppler security update Advisory ID: RHSA-2008:0239-01 Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advisory URL: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2008-0239.html Issue date: 2008-04-17 CVE Names: CVE-2008-1693 ===================================================================== 1. Summary: Updated poppler packages that fix a security issue are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. This update has been rated as having important security impact by the Red Hat Security Response Team. 2. Relevant releases/architectures: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop (v. 5 client) - i386, x86_64 RHEL Desktop Workstation (v. 5 client) - i386, x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux (v. 5 server) - i386, ia64, ppc, s390x, x86_64 3. Description: Poppler is a PDF rendering library, used by applications such as Evince. Kees Cook discovered a flaw in the way poppler displayed malformed fonts embedded in PDF files. An attacker could create a malicious PDF file that would cause applications that use poppler -- such as Evince -- to crash, or, potentially, execute arbitrary code when opened. (CVE-2008-1693) Users are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which contain backported patches to resolve this issue. 4. Solution: Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released errata relevant to your system have been applied. This update is available via Red Hat Network. Details on how to use the Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_58_10188 5. Bugs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/): 6.
