Win2k and DMA on a Maxtor 292720U8 HD

Recommended Posts

My computer...

athlon 550

fic sd11 mb w/ bios nc608

64 mb ram

27.2 gb 5400 rpm Maxtor hd

running win2k

For some reason win2k won't use dma mode on my hd, even though it does support it. I already checked "use dma if available" but it keeps using PIO. Sucks, uses all my processor and only gets 3 mb/s of throughput. Please list any suggestions you may have.

Pretty obvious I know, but have you checked

a) The IDE channel is set up for DMA in the BIOS

B) The drive itself supports DMA

Um...OK.

How about checking the cable itself...and is there another non-UDMA device on the same IDE channel?

Also, does W2K have drivers for the mobo/UDMA?

FIC SD11 is known for it incompatibility with Maxtor UDMA66 HDD, the solution seems to be lies in using old DMA33 cable (to settle for less, better than nothing at all) or to claim an RMA with maxtor to replace the HDD at their discretion. smile
