usb problems and com1 and com3 problem

Recommended Posts

i have an intellimouse explorer that i was running through usb. i recently installed the via 4 in 1 4.22 update. this update wasnt for my usb but right after that the usb got messed up and the cursor movement was very jerky, and the mouse stopped responding and hour or 2 after i restarted. if i use it with a ps2 adapter it works fine but i liked my high refresh rate.

i also have a problem with com1 and com3. they both share the same irq. i cant change the irq for com1 and if i change the irc for com2 i get an error after i restart saying "the device cannot start". so i uninstall and reinstall the port. it shares the same irq with com1 so i change it. i restart. i get "the device cannot start" error again. the only solution i have found is to uninstall com1 but its very annoying when i have to do this everytime i restart. my modem is on com3 and i cant figure out any way to change it so i have been stuck uninstalling com1 when i restart.

i recently reformated to dual boot win2k and 98. before i was running just win2k. i had a com problem in the beginning but i was able to fix it. this one just keeps coming back.

here's my specs:

amd k6 III 450 on a FIC PA-2013 (VIA chipset)

128 meg of ram

13 gig wd hard drive(5 gigs 98, the rest 2k)

sb live! value

diamond viper v770 w/ detonator 5.16

cheap ISA aopen 5k voice modem

netgear 10/100 nic

hmmm... thats about it. thanks for the help. smile

ok, i just wanted to point out that now my usb doesnt seem t be working at all. it works for about a minute or so and then the light goes off on the mouse and it stops responding. i tried reinstalling the usb drivers and i still have the same problem.... hmmmm..... i guess its ps2 for now...
