Video/Sound Card Question

Recommended Posts

I currently have the following config:

Intel P-III 500mHz

192m Ram

20gb HD

ATI XPert@play (8mb PCI) Video Card

Diamond Monster 3D II Video accelerator

Creative Labs AWE 32 Sound Card

Altec-Lansing 3 pc. Speakers (2 satellites and 1 subwoofer)

Window 2000 Pro (Retail)

I want to upgrade my 3D Accelerator card and my sound card but I'm not sure which ones will work best under Win2K. As far as the video accelerator goes, I've heard good things about the Voodoo 3 cards, the GeForce cards, and the Nvida TNT cards. For sound, The Diamond MX-300 and the Soundblaster Live! Platinum have come up. Can anybody give me some recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Graphics card? Well I like the Matrox G400 Max - the drivers are very stable under Win 2K (unlike the Geforce), and the card gives good 3D performance coupled with excellant image quality. It's not state of the art, but it is still good enough to run all the current games smoothly.

Sound card wise, I'd choose the SB Live (especially with Liveware 3 drivers imminent). I think the Diamond card uses the Aureal Vortex chipset - if this is the case, please bear in mind that Aureal have just filed for bankrupcy - which puts future driver releases in a somewhat fragile state.

G400MAX & SB Live! here too.

Excellent combo, Matrox have done a good job so far with their Win2k drivers, very stable.

For stability I'm using a Voodoo3 3000 (with non-beta drivers) with zero problems. As for SB Live save your money and stick with a SB PC128 does the duty just fine.

Question: what is the main intent for your system?

Gamer or graphic arts then stick with the Voodoo3

Multimedia - video editing go for Matrox

Only advice is stay away from ATI. Their drivers stink for Win9x platforms so I would anticipate that their Win2k drivers wouldn't hold to par.

I use my system primarily for graphics (I'm a graphic artist) and when I'm sick of graphics, I play games (Been sick of graphics ALOT lately. wink I just know that I need to upgrade these two items and I don't want to waste my money on something that won't work worth a **** under Win2K. I love Win2K and everything works great right now, and there ain't no way in HELL I'll ever let a Win9x installation CD anywhere near my computer again! laugh
