Stability and scalability at the heart of 4D v11 SQL Release 3 - Published on 11/18/08

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

4D, Inc. today the availability of 4D v11 SQL Release 3, which highlights the maturity and robustness of its new database engine built on the SQL standard. 4D v11 SQL Release 3 exploits and embraces the power of high-speed servers with a dramatic expansion of 4D-based application capabilities. On top of pure performance improvements and core stability, numerous other features have been introduced.

San Jose, CA - 4D, Inc., producer of the integrated software platform that simplifies the process of developing and deploying business applications, announced today the availability of 4D v11 SQL Release 3, which highlights the maturity and robustness of its new database engine built on the SQL standard.

Extremely powerful:

Created by design to take advantage of pre-emptive multithreading in data access operations and memory management, the core of 4D v11 SQL has been further optimized since Release 2 to exploit the multi-core architecture of the most modern computers and servers, under Windows and Mac OS X, whether 32- or 64-bit. This optimization, has received a resoundingly positive response from users, who rave about 10- to 30-fold speed gains, obtained without any modification of existing code.

"We have subjected version 11.3 of 4D Server to a series of load tests, intensively querying the database over hundreds hours uninterrupted, in configurations from two to twenty-four processor cores," said Laurent Ribardire, Chairman and Founder of 4D, and architect of the new core of 4D v11 SQL. "The results confirm the validity of our parallelization algorithms over a variable number of processor cores, and prove 4D v11.3 a server completely adapted to the most advanced configurations."

A minor update with major benefits. On top of pure performance improvements and core stability, numerous other features have been introduced. Among these:

* A new SQL connection protocol is now available to allow 4D applications to communicate without ODBC, thus improving connection and response time

* SQL schemas that allow tighter control of access rights to the SQL server, which also benefit third-party applications across the ODBC protocol as well as native SQL "Pass-Through" connections, and access from the Flex environment using the 4D for Flex library

Additional performance gains come courtesy of a new compression algorithm for SOAP services between 4D applications. The execution of Web Services, whose usage is increasingly widespread in applications deployed with 4D and 4D Server, have been further accelerated.

Finally, the development environment has been improved with a component that easily and quickly lets users take advantage of 4D v11 SQL's native SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) engine. With over 100 extensively documented high-level commands, 4D SVG allows the creation and manipulation of charts and vector graphics dynamically via application data. This results in richer user interfaces with graphs, charts, dashboards, or images that can be transformed on the fly, with no degradation of quality.
