Win2000 and voice modems?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of any internal voice modems which work with windows 2000? Specifically looking for PCI modems, but if none will work, ISA will due for now. I also need to know what software anyone is using with these, as Symantec's Talkworks supposedly doesn't work under win2000 (according to symantec). I've currently got a 3com (USR) PCI voice modem, and 3com says that just about all of their PCI modems DON'T do voice under win2000. I could really care less about actual modem connections, as all I need are the voice capabilities to answer my phone.

PCI (winmodems) do have a lot of trouble in Windows 2000, mostly because they are crappy <g>. Seriously, though, Talkworks 3.0 does work in Windows 2000 (I am currently using it) with my URS Sportster Voice (ISA). You will need to make sure that you get a hardware modem, rather than a software (e.g. winmodem)modem. Alternately, pick up an external modem. The 3Com Sportster Voice external is an excellent modem. Check to see if there are drivers for the USB version of the external modem, as that is what I would probably buy if I were you. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip. I was really hoping to use a winmodem as I had in '98, as I've only got 1 ISA slot, and tons of PCI slots (mostly filled), and the winmodems really don't add much of a system hit with a decent speed processor. Heck, I've got an old ISA USR 28.8 hardware voicemodem here in the drawer, maybe I'll just stick that in since I only need the telephony and faxing features most of the time. Would like to have 56K in case the dsl goes down, but until I find something better, it should do. Do you know of any USB voice modems which claim to work under win2000? Funny about talkworks, I'd installed it, and it worked fine for faxes, but I wasn't getting any voice support, so I checked Symantec's site, and they said it didn't work under 2000. I guess they just don't want to deal with the support headaches, they've always had piss poor support.

From what I understand, the 3Com Sportster Voice USB now works in Windows 2000. The trick will be finding a modem that works in Windows 2000 AND Talkworks Pro. I understand that the USB modems may have a hard time with Talkworks. Why not an external modem that runs off one of the serial ports? Check symantec to see if the 3com usb modem works. Good luck!
