815 Chipset, 133mhz CPU & PC100 DIMM's

Recommended Posts

Well I used to be totally up on all available chipsets.

Just from the name of a motherboard I could tell you what CPU's you could fit.

I used to know what chipsets supported what - seems I have let my knowledge drop.

Can anubody confirm the following:

On a motherboard with an 815 Chipset, even with a CPU with a FSB of 133mhz you can in fact still safely use PC100 DIMM's due to the fact that the memory bus speed can be set differently to the CPU FSB?

Thanks.

I depends on the quality of the ram. I ran a P3 300 at 2.5 x 133 with PC 100 ram with no problems. My ram is rated at 6n and 7n. I heard with PC66 ram you can run 100mhz if the ram is good also. So my answer to you is yes if the ram is of high quality.

Ah...

I'm aware that good quality RAM can be run faster than it's validated speed.

Ie. Some PC66 RAM was happy at 100mhz and some PC100 RAM is happy at 133mhz.

What I'm actually on about is the ability of the 815 chipset to run the RAM side of things at a different speed to the CPU.

So I wouldn't actually be 'over-clocking' PC100 DIMM's to 133mhz, rather the 815 chipset would be running the CPU at 133mhz but the memory would only be running at 100mhz (The correct validated speed).

HI

Actually my configuration is CPU at 133 and memory

at 100MHZ and my board support it. i Think that all mobos support 100MHZ memory cos there are to kind of FSB with The coppermine (100 & 133).

All i815/e chipsets have the ability to run the ram at a different bus speed than the cpu is running. On the asus cusl2(the premium i815e board) you can set 133:133:33, 100:133:33, 100:100:33 etc, which is like cpu:ram:bus, you can also go up to like 216 for some mad overclocking..heh

Thanks Wind,

That's the answer I was looking for.
