Device Manager Code 31?

Recommended Posts

Recently I've installed W2K service pack 1 on my machine. Now both the DVD and CDRW are inaccessable, and show an yellow exlamation point in the device manager (Code 31). The DVD and CDRW are on the second IDE channel; master & slave respectively. Hardware troubleshooter was absolutely no help, and MS's online knowledgebase procedures didn't help at all either. "Just for fun" I re-installed a clean copy of W2K and then SP1, and still the problem persists! Help, I don't want to go back to W98!! I'd appreciate anyone who could help.

System specs: Micron Millenia Max

BX2 based MB/PIII 600 (latest BIOS update)

192M RAM

IDE Channel 1, master: IBM Deskstar 27GB

IDE Channel 1, slave : Maxtor 20GB

IDE Channel 2, master: Generic DVD

IDE Channel 2, slave: 4x4x32 CDRW

SB Live

Geforce 2 GTS

Thats definatly not the problem. Although I will double check. This is not a new computer, I've had this system running for more 6 months on Windows 98, and 4 months with W2K with no hitch (right now my system is dualboot; 98 on C, W2K on D). This whole problem started after installing SP1. There is no resonable explanation why it would just stop working all of a sudden. Damn I hate MS! Does anyone else have some suggesions?
