CDR drive "disconnecting" mid-burn?

Recommended Posts

I am having a very frustrating problem with my Yamaha 8424E in Win2000. No matter what program I use of the 4 I have installed: (Nero 5.0.1.8, EZCD4 4.02, CDRWin 3.8B, or Fireburner v1.06) when I press the "write" button (figuratively speaking), most of the time the program will just appear to freeze up and I cannot eject the cd from the cdr drive. My only solution is to turn the computer off and then on. This last time it happened, I tried going into the device manager to check properties, etc. and when I right-clicked the yamaha and chose properties, the device manager locks up.

It's almost like the cdr drive disconnects from the system and freezes anything associated with it.

I did a search for "aspi" and "cdr" and looked over some of the other problems, and none seem to be related to this.

For what it's worth, this computer is on a NetWare network, and I'm not logged in as the Administrator, but am using an account that has administrator rights.

Please help! I'm tired of formatting! hehe.

The good news is, I logged in as the Administrator to this Win2k machine (which doesn't logon to the NetWare network) and burning appears to be fine.

The bad news is, this doesn't really narrow down if my problem is related to other software installed, or if it has something to do with being on the network.

It is possible to have the network card cause delays on the system bus which would easily crash a CD writer. What kind of network card are you using? Is it fully PnP? Does it have the ability to detect if the cable's unplugged?

If you don't have these features I'd recommend grabbing a new card. Personally, I'm using a Netgear FA310TX and it works great. I have used different cards in the past and I have had some 10base that caused lots of headaches on my network so be carefull what you get. The best adapters out there are Intel, of course, but most >$25 10/100 PCI cards work very well.

Interesting. I use a 3com 3C905B 10/100 pci card, and assumed it's one of the "good ones" to use. Now that I know it's not, something physically wrong with the burner or the way I have it setup, I will pursue this network interference theory.

Thanks for the feedback JediBaron

Don't be hasty, 3com NIC's are good cards. You might want to test it with a different card, such as the FA310TX. Netgear are good cards, but I'd prefer the 3coms if money wasnt an issuse..

holy cow, I just re-read my reply after Hornet303 replied, and I see it came out all wrong, hehe.

I meant to say, now that I know my problem is probably not hardware related, i might explorer a software conflict or something, since it works fine with the Admin account.

sorry for the confusion, hehe

well has it ever burned right when your logged onto the network? you said when your not logged on it does, so maybe its a network problem.

yeah, it will burn correctly right after a clean boot, maybe 20% of the time. I just haven't figured out what the variable is yet, as to why it will one time and not another.
