New York, New York - An Event Apart, the conference for people who make websites, will feature an all-star lineup of speakers including Whitney Hess, a leading user experience design consultant and strategic partner with Happy Cog. Hess will explore techniques to help attendees find out who their users are, understand what they really need, and ensure that they are providing the right product for that audience.

Through her work as a speaker, and in her blog Pleasure and Pain, Hess highlights the best and worst experiences she finds in the virtual world, as well as the real world. Together with her audience, she dissects what went wrong (or right!) with websites and products to figure out how to create more usable, useful, and desirable experiences.

"Remember that website where you got totally lost and frustrated and gave up before you got anything done? That was a bad user experience, and it's my mission in life to erase those from the planet," says Hess. "The first step is to demand that things get better. I'm just here to help."

Prior to going independent, Hess was on the design team at Liquidnet, an international financial software company that runs the leading electronic marketplace for wholesale stock trading. Previously, she was an interaction designer at two marketing agencies, Digitas and Tribal DDB, where her clients included American Express, The New York Times, Allstate, Claritin, Tropicana, and EarthLink. Most notably, she helped to conceive, design, and test an innovative card search tool for American Express and is named as a co-inventor on its U.S. patent. Hess's session, DIY UX: 5 Ways to Give Your Users an Upgrade (Without Calling In a Pro), takes place during An Event Apart Boston, June 22-23 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place.

Hess explains, "Often, the way the user experience process is described makes it sound like an enormous undertaking and expense, when in actuality there are a lot of little things teams can do to ensure they're making their users happy. By adopting a few new skills, it's possible for designers to better identify users and understand their behaviors and motivations so that they can create products and services that are delivered in an easy to use and pleasurable way."
