jdulmage 0 Posted November 18, 2000 Just heard from someone that in the news it says that 3Dfx is calling it quits, they will only make chipsets for other companies now. 3dfx changes direction ? [Comments] by Thomas McGuire @ 14:33 Apparently they are. No more manufacturing there on graphics card soon. LAS VEGAS (CNNfn) - Two years after striking out in a new direction, graphics-chip maker 3dfx is going back to its roots in an attempt to regain the company's dwindling strength in an increasingly tight market. The company plans to close its Juarez, Mexico, card manufacturing plant & remove itself from the business of building the graphics cards that reside in desktop PCs. This is an abrupt switch from the December 1998 takeover of STB Systems, which 3dfx heralded as a move that would put them in charge of their own destiny. Instead, that move -- combined with numerous production delays & supply problems -- has removed the company from its once-dominant position in the industry. My input on this: Good, 3Dfx didn't stand a chance against Nvidia anyways. Goodbye!!!! Share this post Link to post
INFERNO2000 0 Posted November 18, 2000 so sad... but..whereas 3dfx is going back to just chipsets...nvidia is releasing CRUSH, a chipset that could compete with the likes of VIA..which I would like to see. I'd go back to AMD if nVidia puts out a good system...I might even settle for onboard GeForce2MX graphics for a while? I hope it goes well. Share this post Link to post
tristan777 0 Posted November 19, 2000 i don't really understand why u called this thread "good bye 3dfx" or whatever. it's not like the company is gone. i think this is a step in the right direction. the voodoo2s owned, but ever since the voodoo3 they've only been second best. maybe some other companies will think of a something better to do with 3dfx's chips than making a graphics card with 196 SLI chips on it. hehe. inferno- my t-bird 800 coupled with my Asus a7v doesnt crash. my friend's P3 on the other hand... hehehe... btw, this is kinda off topic but have u guys seen the "Geforce2 GO" or whatever? the laptop chip? man, that thing kicks ass. u might actually be able to game on a laptop once those are released. that would be nice to just be able to take a laptop and a monitor to lan parties and such... INFERNO2000 0 Posted November 19, 2000 If the Crush by nVidia works out well, I might jump back on the AMD side of the fence. That'd be really sweet No VIA, and <GARAUNTEED COMPATIBILITY WITH NVIDIA GRAPHICS CARDS> Even the onboard MX might be nice Good for you! Glad to hear you had no problems...but since I did...I'm enjoying my intel....and plan on doing so until early 2002 maybe by then, the P4 will be matured...in the 2ghz (if not higher) area...and AMD will have their Sledgehammer or Clawhammers out.... I'll be able to pick the 64bit CPU I want Share this post Link to post

jdulmage 0 Posted November 19, 2000 err...when they start to close places, that means they are basically trying to survive a losing battle. Also, yeah, what is so funny about Nvidia Crush? [This message has been edited by jdulmage (edited 19 November 2000).] Share this post Link to post
