ATI and Linux

Hi smile

 

First post over at linux compatible, so be nice smile

 

Im just about to stick mandrake 8.2 back on after ive sorted out a backup of the NT partition, and im just wondering what the ATI linux drivers are like, has anyone had any first hand experience?

 

I doubt ill be playing many games using mandrake but you never know smile

Actually, I do know that all the places speaking of having proper 3D acceleration enabled talk about nvidia stuff. So, while you might get really good 2D performance with it, I'm not so sure about 3D.

Thanks Clutch, just wanted to add another post to linux compatible really smile bringing the total to 3 laugh Seems a lil dead frown

 

Ive since had a look on a few sites and im not even sure i could get decent 2D at the moment on the 9700 frown

 

Might just have to leave it until they bring some drivers out.

ATI's good for drivers.

 

Have a look on the website, under linux drivers.

I'm getting an 9700, I wouldn't if there wasn't a linux driver.

ATI has official drivers for Linux, for the 8500 and so on...they support 3D but I didn't test them. Even before they were "released" you could use the ATI FireGL 8x00 drivers which had 3D support (XFree 4.2.x has only 2D support for the Radeon 8500).
