INFERNO2000 0 Posted February 28, 2001 Ok... I have to have an answer by 4 PM CDT, as the store closes at 5, and there's only 1 of each. I have 2 systems. A PIII 800eb@954(159mhz FSB) on an Asus CUSL2 a CeleronII 633@??? without a motherboard to go with it At the local store, I can get 1: Asus CUSL2-C for 130 2: Abit SA6R for 165 I'd go online, but I need this motherboard by Friday, and after overnight shipping, it comes to be about the same. My question is this which board should I get? Keep this in mind: 1: if I get the CUSL2-C no changes will be made. PIII 800eb will remain on the CUSL2. 2: if I get the Abit SA6R, the CUSL2 will go to the CeleronII, and the SA6R will be used in my main system(due to the RAID function), thus making it a PIII800eb@954(if it can reach it) on the Abit SA6R, and the Celeron on the CUSL2. 3: if I do number 2, I'm not sure what my overclocking ability would be. I want to remain at the current speed, if not go faster. I don't want to lose what I have right now. Share this post Link to post
Four and Twenty 0 Posted February 28, 2001 get the abit board and setup raid. Even if u can't clock your processor up as high the raid will make up for the speed difference. Share this post Link to post
INFERNO2000 0 Posted February 28, 2001 Well, my friend at the town where the shop is is picking up the SA6R as I type. the RAID isn't of any real use to me YET. All I have are a 15GB and a 45GB hdd-both UDMA 100/7200 rpm. so RAID won't do me any good until I get another one of the above drives(probably the 45GB as cheap as they are). Right now, my question is this: I already have a Promise Ultra100 controller, as I have more IDE devices than ports. Is there a way to turn the highpoint controller into a standard harddrive controller(NON-RAID)? It'd be great to be able to put my drives on the highpoint, NOT RAID them, put my cd-drives on my normal ports, and sell off my promise card(or trade it for some RAM). As long as the motherboard is good, and isn't the limiting factor in my overclocking, I think I'll be pretty happy. Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted February 28, 2001 I would imagine that the unit will function in a non-RAID fashion as well. So you should be able to put the hardrives on there and use them in a normal fashion. Share this post Link to post
SHS 0 Posted February 28, 2001 Just my thougth you better off with the Asus CUSL2-C being far less build on junk. No Audio No Video & Thank god No Raid, Raid only useful if you match set of drive. Share this post Link to post
INFERNO2000 0 Posted February 28, 2001 I do plan on eventually getting drives to use RAID properly the sound and video, yeah, I'd rather do without. but it's not really a problem...I have it already with the CUSL2(no audio though) 40 bucks for RAID. buying a RAID card would cost me 100 bucks Share this post Link to post
SHS 0 Posted February 28, 2001 Then ask your self are plan on doing any hevry duty data base, AVI capturing other then that you don't need it. One thing for sure It an't going to make that game go faster nor load any faster. Share this post Link to post
INFERNO2000 0 Posted February 28, 2001 I know but it's something to play with and I act as a primary fileserver for 30 computers on weekends Share this post Link to post
