JMD 0 Posted March 3, 2001 Can anyone tell me why a person would pay all that extra money to up grade from a 933 prossessor to a 1 gig. Is there any differance in speed, I don't think so. And why spend the extra for the 1.5gig when you can save the money and by the 1.4 gig or the 800 to the 900gig no differance in speed, not that the human eye can see. Why make intel any richer. With the extra money you save you can invest it. Im still running a 6oo pentium and it works great. Sorry guys just thinking out loud. Enjoy Share this post Link to post
ThC 129 0 Posted March 3, 2001 yeah i dont understand these people that have to have the latest and greatest HW. Like the people that rushed out and got a P4 when it has been published everyplace that if you buy a p4 now you are pretty much f-ed in the long run because of how they are redisgning the chip and the chipset. Why did they get the P4?? Well either because it said Pentium or because its the latest and greatest. I mean who would want to buy a chip based on a slower ram architecture not to mention one that is about 5x as much as DIMM RAM, and when that chip won't work on any motherboards but the current P4 boards. Which are crap. Share this post Link to post

RattDawg 0 Posted March 3, 2001 Once you start you just cant stop. Very addictive habit. But I can say that I have built 2 computers just from the parts that get replaced in my computer every few months or so. This really works out well for my Wife and Son. RattDawg Share this post Link to post

qwerty01 0 Posted March 4, 2001 I just never upgrade. Once I build a computer, thats as fast as that computer will ever be. When I do build another computer, I only build when it is at least 2x as fast as the last. i.e. my last computer was a K6-2 350 & the one I am on now is a K7-700. I will wait for the AMD 1.4Ghz processor for my next system. I find this is a way that I don't spend as much money upgrading every time something new comes out. Share this post Link to post
JMD 0 Posted March 4, 2001 Dos I have the money, and you take this a little to personally. And I never said you were wrong. There must be a better way to spend money than allways trying to have the latest prossesor expecially if you can hardly notice the differance in speed between some of the chips. You must be able to see the logic in this.......cant you. Share this post Link to post

Can anyone tell me why a person would pay all that extra money to upgrade their cars with polystyrene spoilers? Or pay all that money to go to looking at people playing with a ball? Or pay all that money to collect stamps? The one who dies with the most toys wins! H. Share this post Link to post
erichui 0 Posted March 7, 2001 i do agree with u JMD, but however there are ppl that who wants to do what they want, we can't really do much about it. just try to mind your own business. ok i've recently just build a new computer, a althon 1ghz which is now @1.1. my last system was a celeron 466. and 1 point that i can argue with u is, about the 933 and 1gig. ok ppl can't tell the difference. but u can keep saying that to any processor. like WHO CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 933 and 866???????? i doubt it, ok WHO CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 866 and 833?? and WHO CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE between 833 and 800?? heahe, u can just keep going and going..... and also, to some ppl 1gig and 933 actually does have a difference, maybe there are ppl who really needs the power, like dual 1gig. for applications which needs a lots of horse power........... BladeRunner 0 Posted March 7, 2001 The post above is exactly what I was about to say. Why stop at 933. The 866 isn't much slower, the 833 not much slower than that.... With CPU's there is a cut-off point where upgrades in speed suddenly require a big price increase. For example, here are some UK prices for Intel PIII CPU's: 800mhz - £155 866mhz - £167 933mhz - £190 1Ghz - £207 So, using this list the 866mhz is really the cut-off point, it's £23 to go from the 866 - 933. However, in the grand scale of things, it's only £57 more to go from a 800mhz to a 1Ghz. Probably worth the extra initial investment. Share this post Link to post
INFERNO2000 0 Posted March 7, 2001 In my case, I usually end up having to replace something for one reason or another. Then I get into the situation of buying cheap indentical replacement, or spending a few bucks more and replacing and upgrading? I had to buy a new motheboard for my intel system thought about it.. for 40 bucks more, if I sold my PIII800eb@950, I could buy an Asus A7V133 and 1.1 ghz Tbird(now at 1.31) I did notice a bit of a difference. I upgraded to 512mb RAM just cause I wanted a bit more, and I was getting it at a good price noticed a pretty good difference I don't upgrade to brand new unnecessary things very often. I don't have need to go out and buy a GF2 Ultra...my GTS is workign great. But if a card were to fail, I'd probably go get it if I could afford the extra price. ------------------ My PC is warm. lexluthor 0 Posted March 8, 2001 i like eddie's response. i like oc'ing... it's fun. just put a big damned hsf on everything and turn it up. i got so many fans in this thing that i have tie it down to keep it from flying away. i even got a mini hsf on the adaptec scsi chip too much fun man, and it's cheaper than buying another processor (piii700@900) Share this post Link to post

Ronin 0 Posted March 9, 2001 Overclocking a dualie system is no problem and as long and the board supports it and the chips support it. I have a friend who's overclocking 2 733/133's to 1047 on a dual via board. As far as my box goes, it's my home computer and no I'm not running IIS on it, that's what Linux is for. hehe ... NT_Worker 0 Posted March 9, 2001 Hmmm it seems as the original post got lost a little bit... It does seem strange to me that someone would buy a ~$250 CPU, then turn around a few weeks later and replace it with a new slightly faster ~$300 CPU... When I worked in a custom PC shop this used to happen ALL the time... People would buy a $2500 PC, the CPU costing $500-$600, Intel would release a slightly faster CPU, and these people would come back wanting to upgrade to a $800 CPU for a gain for something like 50-100mhz... I'm one those who likes the fastest... (insert Tim Allen SFX) Everytime I upgrade my PC I have several others that get the hand-me-downs. I don't think JMD was talking about people who will use both CPU's, just the weird ones who upgrade and keep their old CPU as paper weight. ~NT Worker Share this post Link to post
Dirty Harry 0 Posted March 9, 2001 Hey, I recycle my CPU's /MoBo's. That's how I ended up an even happier man with a a LAN. But honestly, it is not because it is necessary or that it makes sence, it is that it is a hobby, I like tinkering with the stuff. Isn't that a reason good enough? H. Share this post Link to post

INFERNO2000 0 Posted March 10, 2001 same here...I do my best to recycle parts...that's how I get so many computers in my LAN If I get a new part, it goes in the appropriate system, and the part it's replacing either gets put in another system, or sold to pay for the new part(usually the later). but I am trying to get rid of a couple systems...the low end ones.. I'm wasting my money on a hobby that makes my life more enjoyable some people it's cars, others it's computers. Share this post Link to post
Tim Bazzinett 0 Posted March 11, 2001 Maybe it is me, but I can tell the difference between 1gig @100 FSB and the same system at 1133 @133 FSB. It is so much better at that bus speed. Share this post Link to post
