Bigegg 0 Posted March 23, 2000 What's so great about linux ? If you just want to USE it.. impossible First you need to read a couple of books... I don't know but I think that there are just like win2000, linux also have many disadvantages. But that's my opinnion. And ok, linux is open source.. so what? Everyone can screw up the whole thing. who things the same or different about it? cheers Share this post Link to post
Ge0ph 0 Posted March 23, 2000 Who cares? Just use what works for you. If you are unhappy with what you are using then try something else. But the bottom line is: Use what works for you. Don't let some one else tell you what is best, make up your own mind. Your the one who is going to be using it, not them. Share this post Link to post

foxman98 0 Posted March 23, 2000 What's so great about linux huh? Well let's see. It's free. 0 dollars. $0. How much does Windows2k pro go for? Around 250 for a full version I believe. Secondly I have three machines. One Dual PIII 500 - running win2k. Why? Because I use Windows apps etc for coding / playing games / e-mail etc. etc. However my other two machines are linux. One is a firewall at home, a pentium 100 w/ 16 megs of ram. It's been up for 162 days now, no maintenance, and with those specs 2k wouldn't even boot. The other machine is hooked up to the network and my stereo in another room. I can remotely telnet in, play mp3's etc, and even use an xserver for windows to login graphically. Linux does not fit all applications for all people. if it does the job for you, use it you will like it. And with the advent of such distributions as Corel and Mandrake it is not thatr hard to use. But IMO if u are gonig to use a computer seriosuly u might as well know how to operate your system. reading is a good thing. Cheers, Steve Share this post Link to post
Cosmica 0 Posted March 23, 2000 Well, i find the windows group of OS to be very intuitive, any app or any part of the OS is easy to find without having to read manuals. Which makes it nice to support. Also almost all companies I know use it so I can find lots of work. I dont agree with people who say that the windows OS are crashing always etc...because if you build a machine with good hardware, setup the drivers correctly and use only well programmed apps and look after the OS correctly then windows can be a happy crash free experience. I am very happy with windows 2000 it is perfectly stable and provides many advanced administration features...finally an OS and server designed for the people who support it. (although you better do your homework and take a good backup before you think about upgrading any of your NT servers. Regarding linux, I tried it once and although i got a kernel running first time no problem i found hardware very difficult to install and also it was crashing frequently in KDE probably because i had not configured it correctly. I think Linux has a long way to go to be a good desktop product because it is not very user friendly. But this is not to say that in the future it will develop into something very good. On the server side things are much different. The cost savings are tremendous if you can get a good server running. Compare the cost to say NT or Netware with a 25 user license for instance and then add the cost of an intranet solution such as exchange 5.5 Share this post Link to post
Tim Bazzinett 0 Posted March 24, 2000 I am in the same catagory as Foxman98. Bigegg, what level do you use a computer at? What I mean is, do you use a computer at home (games and internet), an office computer(word docs and some office stuff), or do you operated an e-commerce/database/web/file server? Windows2k can be used for all levels and is easy to use. Linux if properly configured, is much better suited at the higher level stuff, such as the e-commerce/web.... Not to say that windows is bad at this. In fact windows2k is better at some things. The debate on which is better seems to be more like a ford vs chevy bit. At home, I primarily STILL use win95 with dual boot to win2k for better internet throughput. The other machine is a Japanese Win2k Pro (for my wife who is from there), that dual boots into Red Hat 6.0. My linux basically serves as a good backup file server in case window goes caput. It is also a good way to learn the basics of UNIX. Yes, Bigegg, you have to read a lot of books to understand Linux, but at the time when I first bought my first computer loaded with win95b, I had to read alot to understand that at the time, as no one I knew had a computer. ------------------ Celeron 300A@450, Abit BH6, 160 RAM, Maxtor 6.4 UDAM33 HD, 20x Lite-on CDROM CL TNT-1 , Voodoo2 8, meg, 17"Daytek Share this post Link to post
Bigegg 0 Posted March 25, 2000 Hi ya.. this is what I like about the people who visited these forums. You can talk about anything without getting some people mad because you're PRO linux or PRO w2k. I'm not using it as a fileserver, I installed it a few times, debian, red hat and mandrake.. in mandrake, kde was crashing a lot. but tell me, what would be the world WITHOUT any non crashing apps?? Currently using W2K, for games, internet, apps, multimedia... games just a few, primary mp3's and all that stuff and visiting this place.
