For instance the user logs on and see's that of all the software/hardware logged at NTCompatible that: 85% Games work in Windows 2000 40% Games work in NT4 ...... Just a thought..... clutch 1 Posted March 28, 2001 I would like to see a "how-to" section for setting things up, like WINS, DNS, creating users, basic networking, slipstreaming, etc. Most of it could be comprised of existing posts with a little bit of editing. The percentage idea would be kind of neat too. Four and Twenty 0 Posted March 29, 2001 1. Copy the Windows 2000 CD to your HD. 4. Extract Sp1network.exe to a subdirectory. 5. Go to the Update directory in the extracted SP1 directory. 6. Make a batch file called update.bat and place these lines into it: update.exe -s:F:\W2PSEL_EN What update.exe looks for is the i386 directory. So change the F:\ to reflect the drive that has the i386 directory from the Windows 2000 CD. W2PSEL_EN is just the directory where the i386 directory resides. In case your wondering why mine is different it's because I have the SELECT version. 7. Save the batch file and run it. 8. It should update your files and it will tell you when it is done. If it doesn't then you have done something wrong. 9. Download CDRWIN from www.goldenhawk.com 10. Get the CD-ROM boot sector and CD Marker files from here: http://www.angelfire.com/de2/w2kcd/neededfiles.zip 11. Place the appropriate files from neededfiles.zip into the root directory of the copied CD. Place CDROM_NT.5 into the root of the CD. Place: CDROM_IP.5 - If you are doing 2000 PRO then place this into the root. CDROM_IS.5 - If you are doing 2000 SERVER then place this into the root. CDROM_IA.5 - If you are doing 2000 ADVANCED SERVER then place this into the root. 12. The root of the CD should now have these files: Autorun.inf cdrom_iX.5 cdrom_nt.5 read1st.txt readme.doc setup.exe 13. Open CDRWIN and choose the File Backup and Tools option 14. In the BACKUP/TOOL Operation Choose the Build an ISO9660 Image File 15. in FILE BACKUP List click the DIRECTORY button and choose the directory where you copied the Windows 2000 CD. Click OK. Then click the ADD button. You should see the directory in the big box now. 16. Check the INCLUDE HIDDEN FILES,LONG FILENAMES(JOLIET),INCLUDE SYSTEM FILES,RECURSE SUBDIRECTORIES boxes. 17. DosFreak 2 Posted March 31, 2001 Oooooo. I'd also put a writeup in there how to copy the bootsector off of any CD and stuff. Also some other stuff I'm working on such as 9x boot CD's and stuff. For instance right now I copied all the FULL versions of the 9x OS'S onto one cd and all the UPGRADE versions onto another CD and I'm gonna make 'em bootable with a bootmenu. Between people trying to get DaggerFall to work, downloading and testing out the latest ver of Whistler, Downloading Exchange 2000 and migrating network from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000, Upgrading our servers from Windows NT4.0 to Windows 2000, Downloading the latest distros of Linux and looking for progs of what I current do in Windows to what I can do in Linux. (I'm not happy with where Windows is going and I also want to get into Linux more.), Installing Siderwinder firewall to a test machine and figureing out how to use Sidewinder so I can fix our 2 Sidewinder firewalls on base and redo them, Implementing a test network to test newer versions of software and to play around with switchers/routers and IPV6. We plan on implemnting 2 Domains connected to our test "CLOUD" (the internet) so we can play around with various things. oh and figureing out what and howto to write-up stuff for the Ntcompatible website! I have been learning/deploying Exchange 5.5, setup an Exchange 2K environment for study on collaboration abilites, getting deeper into SMS 2, working on ASP-to-Database code, going to classes for Photoshop 6 and access 2k, studying to update my MCSE to 2K, and learning our Cisco equipment (PIX and 1720 router) to take over where our consultants left off so I can give the sales and exec peeps access to exchange and our ERP system from the outside. You know, I thought that when I found a job that I really liked I would be able to relax a bit. Instead, I find that I work harder than ever! The whole crew where I worked at got nice fat thank you in the form of a layoff in 99, and now I feel I have to learn everything possible in case that happens again. Oh well. Also, we can add testing WinXP, as it appears we can now get it regualarly for the office (at least I have beta 2 at the moment anyway). ------------------ Regards, clutch Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted April 1, 2001 oops, I forgot SMS too. That software is really neat and I plan on using it more now that we move our network over to ATM. Our network is humming along now on this new ESX-3000 switch but it still needs to be optimized. I'm looking into pushing out customized registry updates, Norton Upgrades and OS updates. Neato stuff! I LOVE FREE SOFTWARE! Now all I need is that version of Sidewinder for Windows 2000. Anyone hear about that or know when it's coming out? Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted April 1, 2001 I don't know if you have been here, but try www.swynk.com for all the backoffice stuff. I have put up a few SMS queries there as well (as James Carter, of course ) and they have a lot of good tips to get your setup off the ground. We had our system pushing out SP6a to NT boxes, and it worked pretty well. I had to can the system in the mean time (I just setup a test bed on my home network with SQL 2K) in lieu of a new server to run SMS/SQL in the next month or so. ------------------ Regards, clutch Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted April 1, 2001 Oh, and one more thing, get the SMS 2.0 Resource kit. It has a bunch of nice stuff in it and a 6LB manual to go with it. It also has better methods for reporting queries using Excel and Access files (rather than that poor Crystal Reports version that comes with SMS 2.0) along with utilities to fix/remove clients from PCs if you have problems with their installations. ------------------ Regards, clutch Share this post Link to post

May I ask what purpose these particular two steps serve? Why not eliminate them and just use the command prompt? Thats what I did when I slipstreamed my 2k CDs and only had one failure (that being the first I messed up the location of the boot sector or something...). Share this post Link to post
