Acendancy and VESA under NT?

I am trying to get a DOS game called ascendancy to run on NT. It won't let me configure the video. Everytime I try, it says "VESA BIOS call 00h failed!"

Download the Ascendancy patch from www.logicfactory.com

If I remember right, there was an option included to turn off VESA support.
