clutch 1 Posted September 29, 2002 I thought there was a separate box version for Linux Q3A, but is there a simple executable that can be used to convert between the two? I would like to run Q3A under Linux without emulation to see how it runs, and in the process evaluate whether or not I get rid of Windows on my primary box. Thanks. Share this post Link to post
adamvjackson 0 Posted September 30, 2002 I think all you have to do is copy the pk3 files in the same folder structure (/Quake III Arena/Baseq3) as on the cd, then download and install the latest Linux Quake 3 point release 1.31. At least that's how it was described to be, when I enquired about the same thing a few months ago elsewhere. Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted September 30, 2002 Sweet. I'll have to give that a shot. I haven't uninstalled it as of yet from my Windows box so I'll just ftp the bad boy across my network. Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted September 30, 2002 Well, it worked. It looks and runs wonderful, however it did kick me out after about 5 minutes in. However, after running several passes at four.dm_67 (runs at 95fps, where I got about 110 in WinXP so it's REALLY close) it seems quite stable. Thanks for the info! Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted September 30, 2002 OK, it seems that after about 5 minutes or so Q3 just craps out on me and kicks me back to the desktop. The last time it did it I didn't have mouse control, so I alt-tabbed to my console and launched the game again so I could exit. Once I did that, I regained my mouse by the acceleration was heavily reduced (restarting X corrected it). So, anybody have any insight? This same box ran Q3 just fine under Windows XP Pro, and runs the UT2003 Demo as well. I am running RH7.3 and the newest nVidia drivers for my GF2 Pro. Share this post Link to post
Immortal 0 Posted September 30, 2002 could be some config errors, or you might have not taken accross ALL of the files/put hem in the right directory, so when Q3 tries to use them it cant..... P.S great site you have here! 8) Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted September 30, 2002 Actually, it appears that Linux just didn't like the box being overclocked (933@1084). I ran it back to normal and it seems fine after 10 minutes or so of gameplay. I had been overclocking it for so long in XP, that I had forgotten about it. Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted September 30, 2002 Hmm, *nix is probly pushing the system harder. Bench at 320* and I'm sure you'll be suprised. 8) Share this post Link to post
adamvjackson 0 Posted October 1, 2002 Glad you got it working, Clutch... I personally have to install an updated video driver for my Geforce4 ti440. It seems the default nvidia driver included does not have opengl support. Guess I'll tackle that this weekend. Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted October 1, 2002 It's pretty simple, and works rather well. Oddly enough, I could never get the RPMs to work right so I have had to compile from source every time. Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted October 1, 2002 Nope, the RPMs for the nVidia Linux drivers. Share this post Link to post
adamvjackson 0 Posted October 1, 2002 When I looked on Nvidia's site for Linux drivers, they only listed Mandrake 8.2, not 9.0, so perhaps that's why? Did the RPM format change with the kernel version change? Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted October 1, 2002 The kernel rev is a *very* touchy subject, so you really should run "NVchooser.sh" to determine the specific drivers for your setup. Also, just wanted to mention that the drivers installed perfectly on my new RH8 install and I am installing Q3 right now. Share this post Link to post
adamvjackson 0 Posted October 1, 2002 Installed perfectly using the RH 7.3 files listed on the Nvidia site? Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted October 1, 2002 Yep. I used these: GLX http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-3123/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-3123.tar.gz Kernel http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-3123/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.tar.gz As I stated, make sure to run NVchooser just to be on the safe side, but these have worked great in RH 7.3 (with the rev 10 kernel) and RH 8 (rev 14 I think). I just played both Q3 and the UT2003 demo, and they worked well with my GF2 Pro card. Share this post Link to post
REL!c2K 0 Posted January 17, 2003 Clutch; First off, yes there is a linux native port of both Quake 3 Arena and Team Arena Add-on, see http://www.lokigames.com/ and Tuxgames to order them, I am running both, and they rock. Secondly make sure you are using a valid store bought CD Key, or the servers will boot you off, I am not saying that you are running downloaded software, but this happened to me with RTCW. Some jack ass, using a keygen in Windows, ended up stealing my damn store keys on me. I basically wasted 50 bucks for nothing. Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted January 17, 2003 :-) I have been running Q3A in Linux for a while now, but I haven't done anything with Team Arena. In Gentoo, there's this spiffy function where you can "emerge" Q3A and it will install most of the game, and all you have to do is copy over the main pk file and enter your key to make it work. However, I used the previously mentioned bit of copying over an existing Windows install of the game and then patching it with the Linux patch. Share this post Link to post
Tekchip 0 Posted June 1, 2003 FYI: After getting Nvidia drivers in place all you should have to do is copy your pk0 file to the quake3 game directory. That is the only step besides running the installer that should be neccesary. There isn't really an opertunity to screw anything up with the install. Share this post Link to post
