Yes NT is faster at some things than Windows 98 and Microsoft will quite openly state that when running application such as Word or Excel then Windows NT is 20% faster.

The main speed benefit you get from NT is that there is very little delay when switching between applications or impact on you foreground applications when you are running applications in the background because NT’s multitasking and threading are just soooooo much better than Windows 98.

On the question of File systems making a difference then the fastest is NTFS if your hard drive is bigger than 1GB, next comes FAT32 which is fast but not as stable as NTFS and then you have poor old crap FAT16.

Finally NT has support for multi processors, and there are a lot of good 2 processor motherboards around at the moment. Fire up Windows NT or 2000 on one of these puppies and you will understand the true meaning of speed.

Hope this helps!
