Quake 3 in win2000 w/picture

I have Windows2000 on a Athlon 650MHz with 160 megs of ram and a TNT 2 Ultra 32mb video card. When I load up quake it works for like 2 minutes then it begins to flake out. All the edges in the 3d and the text becomse distorted and lines become visible where all the edges should be. check out this link to see what Im talking abouthttp://affinity00.tripod.com/quake.jpg

your TNT2 is overheating. The symptoms you describe are classic failures due to overclocking. If you aren't overclocking your TNT2, you'll need more cooling for it (or return) or your system. If you are overclocking, stop it!, or reduce the amount a bit.

I already have 7 fans in the thing 8 if you include the one on the video card itself. One large fan that was built into the case a little one that lits on an isa slot and has a fan that blows out and one that blows in, the fan on the processor 2 fans on the front blowing over the hard drive and the starndard case fan. Could that really be the problem? Unreal Tournament seems to run ok. Hmm ill see what I can do and tell you if it helps. Thanks

Yep.

Very typical symptom of an overheating graphic chip.

You may have to check if the cooler/fan assembly is well stuck to the chip.

Very often, the job is very badly done by the video card manufacturer.

Pop up the cooler off the chip, clean out their crappy glue, apply a nice coat of thermal compound and put back the original cooler or preferably a bigger/better one.

It doesn't matter how many fans you have, all IC's have they're thermal limits Plus there are other aspects of cooling and overclocking to consider...

 

Note that you are also overclocking the entire card, the memory, the di-electric between the tracks, RC filters become inaccurate, resistors heat up capacitors dry out, and the card generally wears out.

 

The vibration and heat from lots of fans will create microfractures in the joints and tracks, thus signal noise will increase and the actual signal will eventually disapear into the background. Also if by chance the resonant frequency of all these fans matches that of the cards natural frequency it will resonate and eventually snap in two. Not to mention the electrical noise and inductance introduced to the power supply.

 

Note: a driver re-install usually fixes this.

try "underclocking" with some tweaking utils. if now all works fine, then you need a better cooler, not more of that noisy things
