Halflife (CS) on Win2000

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I've just installed Win2000 on my P3-850, 128 MB Ram, TNT2 and now im testing few games. All games are running great but only Halflife makes me worry. When i enter Halflife Win2000 starts swapping and after few seconds it takes more than 90 MB of my ram! It needs a very long time to start playing but then it runs fine...

Under Win98 it didn't need so much ram...;(

Is that normal or could a reinstall of Halflife solve this problem?

Thx, Daster

What is you AGP aperture set at? Did you defrag you drive in Windows 2000? Did you install Half-Life in Windows 2000? Are you using the newest drivers? I have no problem at all in Half-Life Counter Strike. Runs better in Windows 2000 than it did in Windows 98SE smile

I'm also running 128 megs with a TNT2 and have no problems with slow loading.

There is a little sidenote to memory on Win2k, though. According to many sites the memory usage in Win2k, while MUCH more efficient than 98, deals with games in a much more direct manner. This means that when a game wants to make a 32meg precalculated table, Win2k tends to give it the 32megs. Win98 would only give it what it could spare. Therefor, many sites have recommended running with at least 192 megs for games. I personally plan on going to 256 shortly, although I really haven't had any problems with 128. (MORE IS BETTER - hehe)

I have always had tons of disk paging with 128Mb of Ram under Win2k, even running OpenGL with my TNT2 PRO. Direct3D helped me with some games, but I still the paging.

As soon as I went to even 192Mb majority of my problems went away. And now 256 is just Godlike. I would never go back to just 128Mb.

I'll second what Johnny said. The move from 128 to 192Mb RAM made a huge difference.

I never thought I'd see the day. My first computer had 8 KB of memory, and now we are complaining about 128 MB not baing enough.

Don't get me wrong, I have 192 MB. :-)

I am not having problems in CS either (p3 700, 128mb ram, geforce). Here is a little tip that I was given a few weeks ago. Decide for yourself as to whether it helps or not:

For any of your games, create a .bat file. Add the following lines to this .bat file

echo off

Start /high hl.exe (this was for half life).

You can add these following lines right after the hl.exe if you want:

-console -game cstrike -numericping -nojoy -fps_max 100 -noipx

CS is still running flawlessly for me

After you get past the 200 mark, you don't really see a difference. I went from 160 to 384, and saw nothing.
