DosFreak 2 Posted October 16, 2000 Need for Speed: High Stakes & Worms Armageddon I am currently trying to get Need for Speed High Stakes Setup to run in Windows 2000 and I may have figured it out. *sigh* Here goes: On a freshly installed Windows 2000 SP1 with NO other updates installed HS setup complains with a "You must have 95/98". Using the Application Compatibility Toolkit (Not appcompat.exe but the full toolkit) I FINALLY got it to work. So I come into work today and pop it into my work computer.... WTF IT LOADS ARRRRRRRGGHHH!! I haven't put the fix on there HTF can it load???!!! So I try it on another computer which hasn't been updated and I get the same error I got at home. I then install all of the latest application compatibility updated from Microsoft and it still doesn't work. (I know I know it doesn't mention HS in them but might as well try). *UPDATE* I FOUND IT! WOOHOO! It was in the application compatibility Toolkit all along! and Microsoft hasn't released it in their latest update but it is in the Application compatibility toolkit. GO HERE AND DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THIS: http://msdn.microsoft.com/compatibility/act.exe Do a search of Apcompat.inf that troublesome game that might be fixed. I'm currently working on a .txt of what's been fixed. Will take awhile though because it's BIG. Sloppy work. Putting it in their Application Compatibility Toolkit but leaving it out of their update. What a mess. I should be running things over there. Wanna know how I know that they could have put it in their update long ago? Check the date of apcompat.inf in the C:\ACT\Progra~1 directory. Look in the appfix.exe file. apcompat.inf is dated 5/24/200. Good work Microsoft. Who knows how long they have had it before that. Hey Bill Gates. E-mail me. Fire some people and hire me I'll set your company straight. ;( ------------------ C:\Dos C:\Dos\Run \Run\Dos\Run Share this post Link to post
MoreLight 0 Posted October 16, 2000 Hey DosFreak. Should be changed to 2000Freak now. I went and pulled down the toolkit shortly after you posted the link earlier this weekend. Very sweet set of tools. Props for digging up that one. I've been trying to use the tools to get Superbike 2001 to work, plus tips from other posts about deleting the files in the Miles subdir, but no luck so far. Once you have the NFSHS problem dealt with, would you mind using your considerable talents in this area and try to get that one working also? In the meantime, I'm going to blow the dust off my NFSHS disk and give it another try. Not enough tracks to play in Porsche Unleashed Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted October 16, 2000 Yep, HS is fixed. The fix is in the APP Toolkit but Microsoft never put it in their Updates. I guess they lost it and a whole lotta other stuff too. Sorry if my post was kinda cryptic. I don't have the full game of Superbike but I'll play around with the demo for ya. Share this post Link to post

eval 0 Posted November 8, 2002 Simple too, in installation, force sound to IBM compatable. Every pc has it now matter how new and support isn't a deal. Works right off and have complete sound. I don't know about the rest of the games you listed as not working due to sound, but you can give it a try on those too. Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted January 6, 2003 This is an old post and the ACT only works on about 10% of my games in 2K/XP. The rest require other modifications. Share this post Link to post

DosFreak 2 Posted March 7, 2003 I don't know....working for "The Enemy". I'd probably be looking over my shoulder every day. I know some people who hate MS more so than the military. I guess I'd feel kinda dirty to work at MS. But hey money is money..... Share this post Link to post
Phage 0 Posted March 23, 2003 DosFreak, you mentioned that you didn't have any problems with this game. Well I do and frankly I'm pissed off. Those compatibility programs aren't helping me. I get this error message " Battle Zone 2 does not support Windoows NT "... and then I get error log of a certain exe-file that I can't find from any of my HDDs. Any ideas? Game works perfectly under XP. Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted March 23, 2003 I've heard of some people having problems with Battlezone 2 installs. Mine installs fine without any tweaking. Have you tried using the Application Compatibility Layers first? (Creating a shortcut to the installer, doing a properties on it and choosing Windows 95). Also search this forum for Battlezone 2. sk8tillurdead 0 Posted November 11, 2003 I went on google and searched for "yoda stories" "0xc0000005" this site was the only one that came up. I love this game, it has kept me occupied for hours before when I was little. This site HAS TO BE the solution. I was wondering if anyone figured out how to fix the application error "failed to initialize properly (0Xc0000005)." I am not experienced in computers, so I was wondering if you could give me step by step instructions on how to fix this. I will resort to editing .dat files and hacking if I need to, just tell me how to do it. 8) ;( ;( :x I AM DESPERATE! :x ;( ;( 8) Oh yeah, I'm running Windows XP, if that helps.
