DirectX 8 and Screen Refresh/Mode Change

Recommended Posts

My viewsonic 790 makes a loud and long delay every time there is drastic screen mode change (say from 100hz 1024.x786 to 60hz 640x480). It was never a problem for me before DirectX8 because i could either use a refresh rate program (Nvresfix) or Dxdiag's override function to set every to 100hz.

BUT, when i moved to DirectX 8, the problem becomes unbearable as every screen change, say from starting Diablo 2 to actually getting in a game I have to go through about 10 of these delays. Quake3 is better but still maybe 5 of these just to get in a game.

Does anyone else who has run into a similar problem and/or have a solution? BTW, I use Nividia Geforce 2 GTS (the same problem w/ Geforce 256) and its only a problem w/ W2k + DX8 (I have no problem w/ the same setup w/ dual boot W98SE + DX8)....

i've never ran into this problem with win2k, win9x or whistler. have you even checked to make sure that your monitor should even be up that high on refresh, I have mine at 85 Hz because my monitor manual tells me to set stuff to 1240 X 1024 @ 85 Hz for best performance, and it's a 19 inch monitor. Maybe you should try to turn it down.

I don't think the rated refresh limit is any problem

Even the lowest end Viewsonic E790 is rated to run 1024x768 at 116Hz. (however, 1280x1024 is rated at 88Hz)

Do you think that there might be some driver issues with DX8 for that monitor? Have you checked to see if there are new Win2k drivers for your monitor?

Good luck.

Cheers.

I remember that from the days of my Voodoo2, all the clicking and crap. I also remember that a driver change for the Voodoo2 took care of most of it as well. What drivers are u using for your GeForce?
