Old Win95 games

Recommended Posts

I'm having trouble installing older W95 games, specifically Magic: The Gathering in this case. When I run setup it says the program can only be installed on Windows 95 and ends the setup. I've tried using apcompat.exe, but the program just hangs when I try to run setup.exe from it.

I guess this is a pretty basic problem, but I couldn't find a solution from the FAQs so what the hell..

The original purpose of this site was a game compatiblity list (or that's why I had it bookmarked back in the bad 'ol NT4 days).

Anyway, the advice is:

Magic the Gathering (Microprose) Yes W2000 01/00

Install it under Win9x, and

then make sure that you install the 1.25c update. Then use regedit to

export the two following keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MicroProse

and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MicroProse.Boot into W2K and import the

reg keys and then you should be able to play the game with no problems.

You may need to use SETWIN95 on the executables (i.e. MAGIC.EXE,

DECK.EXE, and DUEL.EXE).

Thanks for the advice, but since my C-drive is ntsf, I can't use Win9x. And yes, I did check that advice out before heading to the boards.

However, I did get an idea; I could try to get it to work under Bochs. Does anyone know where I could get a Bochs that has a pre-installed Dos/Win9x ? I have the installation disks, but I can't make a Dos/Win9x bootdisk.

I highly doubt that it will work under bochs and if so it would probably be super slooow. It would likely work fine under VMWARE tho. www.vmware.com If you need help ( wink )with the prog lemme know.

Hey, did anyone ever solve this? I know it's supposed to work if you install it in win9x 1st, but can it be accomplished completely with a win2k install? I'd hate to have to partition my drive... Any help would be appreciated!

Mal Havoc,

I had the same problem as you did. I wanted to play my old Magic the Gathering and Chessmaster 6000 on my new WIN XP.

I read this page and thanks to DosFreak I got it.

Just download the software he recommended (VMware Workstation 3.1.1 build 1790 worked for me). It works grate from within WIN XP and you can then install a virtual Machine OS on your XP system (I installed WIN 98) and run all of your old games and applications. This does not require any changes made to your computer hardware or WIN XP configuration.

I have to say - THANKS - DosFreak !! You are the man smile

Good luck,

Fifo

Guys, on your Win2k (at least 2k Pro, dunno about any other versions) CD under the Support folder is a little program called APCOMPAT.EXE. It allows you to fudge the Windows version that is passed to programs. I used to use it to get Need For Speed 3 to install under Windows 2000 (a problem Windows XP has since solved for me). I don't know if it works with Magic: The Gathering but it's worth a shot.

Also for better emulation for old games try Connectix Virtual PC. www.connectix.com Download the trial and give it a whirl. It's definetly worth buying.
