half-life + win2k sp1 problem

Recommended Posts

The main problem is the VIA 4-1 drivers...they do not work. If it's easy I would recommend you format and start over and NOT install the 4-1 drivers. I would recommend installing the MS hotfix ATA 100 driver and the most recent driver from http://www.viahardware.com/memoryenable.shtm

Also in your Bios you may want to disable the following and see if there is any improvement for you.

APCI in power mgmt

Video bios caching

Video Ram shadow

The main problem currently is the "CPU to APG controller" located in the device manager. This is what is causing the sudden lag. The 504 driver does not work. You can reinstall the MS driver by slecting update driver/next/known drivers and select the other driver listed. Hope this helps and does not confuse you.

Rescue.. I havent tried all your suggestions yet, but I have tried the Microsoft AGP Driver, and I still have the same problem.

Have you actually experienced this problem, and resolved it? What is your setup?

Wicked GL drivers http://www.wicked3d.com/ worked excellent under Windows 2000 with my Voodoo Banshee. It should work even better with your Voodoo3. I also used Smoky's overclocking utility to run my core and memory at 120Mhz stable. http://www.voodooextreme.com/koolsmoky/v_ctrl.html I was able to run 40-60+ fps @ 800X600 in OGL! btw I have encountered the stuttering on occasion with my old Voodoo and current Geforce, but they can both be attributed to lag.

Well, I dont know. Probably not, because usually mobo/cpu deals dont feature the highest performing mobo.

I just thought of the board you might have: the FIC AZ11 or AZ11e.

Unfortunately, FIC also has another mobo with a AMD northbridge/Via southbridge hybrid chipset combo.

Please, look at the damn manual, kritical!

It will at least tell you what the hell your chipset it.

You can even look between the pci slots for the exact board it is.

Just look dammit!

the only way to fix these problems is to install win98, then Counter Strike, then install win2k as an upgrade. This way i know for sure cures the CT problems of stuttering and not being able to find any servers

BTW this also applies to winXP

I gave up.

I switched motherboards from a AMD-751 K7M To a VIA Abit KT7A. This completely fixed all my half-life and 3DMark Problems.

It appears as though its a problem restricted to the K7M or 751 chipset in some way.

I reinstalled in every which way with the K7M, and it never made any difference.

Hope this helps..

Well, I'm just about to give up but I don't want to spend money on a new mobo if I don't have to... So if anyone else has any suggesstions what-so-ever I would be GREATLY appreciative.

Hmm, thats definitely not a good thing. Ive been less than impressed with FICs support in general from what Ive seen.

You could try combing the driver updates for the info here on ntcompatible, but I dont know who would have them.

Off the top of my head, I dont know of any place that has mobo makers drivers, but Im sure they're out there, but that does you no good. I'll try to remember to post a link here if I find a site with the drivers.

If you end up getting a new board I suggest a Tyan Trinity K7 (Socket A, not the Slot A) or the Asus A7V. I know the A7V is awesome, and I have a P3 Tyan Trinity 400 and that is an excellent Pentium 3 board, plus Tyan makes a lot of server boards, so they will be very stable. If you plan to overclock, go with the Asus instead, because Tyan does not target overclockers at all.
