When I boot Win2k wants to be installed

Recommended Posts

Under Win98 I started the Win2k installation proces. it copied some files and rebooted. During boot it started the installation proces under DOS. I had to choose a partition to install, but I forgot to turn on that option before rebooting from Win98.. I cancelled with F3 so I could reboot.

I now changed my mind I want to wait installing Win2K, but everytime I boot I still get the boot-up screen where I can choose between continuing the Win2k install or go to Win98..

Does somebody know how to get rid of it?

Delete boot.ini in your c:\ directory.

Remove the read only attribute from the file (right click on it and select properties, then deselect read only).

It now works. I made this from the boot.ini

[boot Loader]

Timeout=5

Default=C:\

[Operating Systems]

C:\="Microsoft Windows"

In stead of this (default)

[boot Loader]

Timeout=5

Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT

[Operating Systems]

C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Setup"

C:\="Microsoft Windows"

By the way.. If I install Windows 2000 on a new partition on my HD, is it easy to uninstall and then go back to Win98?

if it's on a seperate partition to Win9x, then the edit above will prevent it booting.

To "deinstall" it, format the partiton!

Here is the solution. You dont have to edit or delete anything... yet. Get yourself a startup disk from the add/remove programs area of the control panel . Make the startup disk. Reboot the computer and use the startup disk to boot with. At the a: prompt type "sys c:" and then hit enter!!!! Problem fixed! The deleting part is deleting the boot.ini, ntldr file, and the ntdetect file on the c: root.
