Mock Network Server: NT4 Server? Win2k Professional?

Hi, i have a question about which O/S would suit my situation best.

 

For my Grade 13 Computers project, I have to construct a mock Network server that:

1) Allows users on client machines acess to applications on server

2) Allows unique user to have unique storage space on server

3) Acts as a gateway/proxy to the Internet

 

I like win2k's interface, but i dont know if Win2k Pro has all the necessary to work as a small network server.

 

Also, i need the client machine to automatically map a drive/directory from the server for each user. Basically Requirement 2.

 

Anyways, i am in need of help and opinions

Use Linux

 

1) Samba

2) quotad

3) ipmasq

 

There are plain-english How-To's for each of these things available at http://sunsite.unc.edu .

May not be as "pretty" as win2k, but you will have better performance at lower cost (about $2, or your own blank CD).

 

If you choose NT though, go with either NT server, or Win2k Server. Pro doesn't have quota support.

Win2k pro does have disk quota support:

 

Just goto the properties of the drive you wish to enable quotas for (Windows explorer --> right click on drive icon--> properties --> Quota tab).

Some other group is already doing linux.

so basically, for my purposes. there is no difference between NT and Win2k pro?

W2K Pro can act as a small Network Server as long as the machine you choose to handle logons doesn't have more then 10 clients.

W2K Pro can also act as a Proxy and Gateway by using some Proxy Software. Winroute Pro 4.0 should do the trick. www.tinysoftware.com

Using Computer Managment in W2K under users will allow you to set up home folder mapping. This folder can be stored on the W2K machine, and using Disk Quota you can control the total MB Usage.

W2K Pro will do all of this very well.

Please have in mind, this will not give you DNS Servers, WINS Servers, DHCP or the option to intall some of the Backoffice Applications. It will also be a Workgroup and not a Domain.

If you need more client logons, DHCP, DNS, WINS and a full Domain, you had best look at W2K Server or WinNT Server. Saying from this Post, Linux may prove a bit too much for you. But Linux is a superb O/S. But a bit of a mindfield for first time networkers..!!!
