felix 0 Posted June 11, 2000 I just finished installing a couple of OS's under VMware, on Win2k. This is so much better for experimenting with different OS's than the dual-boot, multi partition option. Now I've got a month to get the money together to register the evaluation version. ;( ------------------ Written on Win2000 using: PII 300 Aopen AX6B 160mb RAM i740 8mb SBLive! felix 0 Posted June 12, 2000 VMWare - Virtual Machine Ware This program allows you to run Virtual Machines from within your current OS. You start VMware, configure the properties of the virtual machine including HD size and simply install your new OS as if it was on it's own machine. VMware will share access to sound, video, network (bridged), CD-Rom, floppy, mouse, keyboard etc. It is much like using WinVNC but with your hardware. It makes the bios settings & virtual hard drive as files. Thus, the number of guest OS's you can use is only limited by your storage space. I currently have Redhat Linux 6.1 and Win98SE running as seperate, guest OS's under Win2k with all facilities working as if it was actually installed. It's really great for playing with OS's without having to format etc. One drawback though is system performance as you need the processor and RAM for two os's when running. Aside from this however, it means that if I screw an OS, or get sick of it, I just delete the Disk file and no questions asked. Another really cool thing is to run Win98 in full screen, and as soon as it shuts down you're back in Win2k - i've freaked a couple of my friends out that way. I downloaded the trial and am using it, but I like it so much that I'm going to have to buy it in a month. I better start saving.
