Litestep Desktop Shell

Recommended Posts

I have seen some screenshots of the Litestep replacement shell for windows. It looks pretty good.

I was interested in getting it, but i wanted to find out if anyone out there has had success with it in Windows 2k?

Also which build or version would you recomend, since the litestep website lists several...thanks!

I am using Darkstep v. .971 in windows 2000 and I am having no problems! I am even using some litestep modules with darkstep. Very stable and no problems here. The best thing is that it uses less resources than the Windows Explorer default shell.

My 2 cents worth. ; )

I think it's quite important that your shell has as little overhead as possible.

I have 512MB RAM in my PC, and last night when I ran Task Manager, it was showing that I was using approximately 1GB of memory. Obviously some of this is swap file, but bloody hell!!

With that amount of RAM it shouldn't really need to touch the swap file. Especially as the machine had only just booted up!

I work with a lot of 3D Animation packages...namely 3D Studio Max and MAYA, so every little bit of extra RAM helps!! Nothing is worse than working in a scene and your harddrive sounds like it is grinding coffee because all of your Physical RAM is gone and its hitting the harddrive for all it is worth. I personally think that for what I am doing that 512MB of Ram is not enough. I am going out to get another 512MB of Ram this weekend to really get this thing cranking!! ; )

Hey man, i think that the problem is with windows & not with the amount of MEM.

The more you get the more he wants.

Did you ever think of installing BeOS?

Gee thanks, that makes me feel a whole lot better!

I would imagine that most of it is swap file related. The Windows suggested settings for a swap file with 512MB RAM are min of 768MB, and a max of 1536MB.

I'm gonna mess with performance monitor this weekend to see just how much actual RAM is being used. I'll then tweak my swap file settings a bit.
