mello_j 0 Posted August 23, 2000 I have seen some screenshots of the Litestep replacement shell for windows. It looks pretty good. I was interested in getting it, but i wanted to find out if anyone out there has had success with it in Windows 2k? Also which build or version would you recomend, since the litestep website lists several...thanks! Share this post Link to post
Donald2B 0 Posted August 23, 2000 I am using Darkstep v. .971 in windows 2000 and I am having no problems! I am even using some litestep modules with darkstep. Very stable and no problems here. The best thing is that it uses less resources than the Windows Explorer default shell. My 2 cents worth. ; ) ------------------ System Specs: Asus P2B-D Dual PIII 700MHz 512MB PC100 RAM Elsa GeForce2 GTS 64MB Video Card Promise Ultra66 Controller WD 15.3 GB HDD WD 20.5GB HDD Asus 50x CD-ROM Sony 4x4x24 CD-RW SB Live! nagual 0 Posted August 24, 2000 why would you want explorer to use less recources with 512 mb ram? =) thats all it uses more of =) Share this post Link to post
Bursar 0 Posted August 24, 2000 I think it's quite important that your shell has as little overhead as possible. I have 512MB RAM in my PC, and last night when I ran Task Manager, it was showing that I was using approximately 1GB of memory. Obviously some of this is swap file, but bloody hell!! With that amount of RAM it shouldn't really need to touch the swap file. Especially as the machine had only just booted up! ------------------ PIII 650 Coppermine Intel 440BX-2 Motherboard 2x256MB PC 100 RAM Maxtor 92049U6 20.4GB 7200RPM UDMA66 Maxtor 52049U4 20.4GB 7200RPM UDMA66 Matrox Millenium G400 MAX AOpen 52x IDE CD-ROM Yamaha CRW4416S SCSI CD-RW Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer USB Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback Pro US Robotics Sportster Flash v90 External modem Iiyama Vision Master Pro 17 3Com EtherLink XL PCI (3c900B Combo) Adaptec 2940 Ultra Wide SCSI controller Sound Blaster Live! Donald2B 0 Posted August 24, 2000 I work with a lot of 3D Animation packages...namely 3D Studio Max and MAYA, so every little bit of extra RAM helps!! Nothing is worse than working in a scene and your harddrive sounds like it is grinding coffee because all of your Physical RAM is gone and its hitting the harddrive for all it is worth. I personally think that for what I am doing that 512MB of Ram is not enough. I am going out to get another 512MB of Ram this weekend to really get this thing cranking!! ; ) ------------------ System Specs: Asus P2B-D Dual PIII 700MHz 512MB PC100 RAM Elsa GeForce2 GTS 64MB Video Card Promise Ultra66 Controller WD 15.3 GB HDD WD 20.5GB HDD Asus 50x CD-ROM Sony 4x4x24 CD-RW SB Live! hteles 0 Posted August 24, 2000 Hey man, i think that the problem is with windows & not with the amount of MEM. The more you get the more he wants. Did you ever think of installing BeOS? ------------------ http://win2ktools.cjb.net Asus CUSL2 Mobo PIII 6000EB Creative GE F**K Force SB LIVE! 256Mb 8.4GB UTA66 Share this post Link to post
nagual 0 Posted August 25, 2000 man if youre comp hits 1 gig just after reboot the prob is not the ram its inbetween the chair and the monitor =) Share this post Link to post
Bursar 0 Posted August 25, 2000 Gee thanks, that makes me feel a whole lot better! I would imagine that most of it is swap file related. The Windows suggested settings for a swap file with 512MB RAM are min of 768MB, and a max of 1536MB. I'm gonna mess with performance monitor this weekend to see just how much actual RAM is being used. I'll then tweak my swap file settings a bit. Share this post Link to post
