INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE

Hi,

 

Guys, I have Windows 2000 installed on a HD. When I putt that HD into another computer with a different motherboard and stuff. It gives me an error @ starting saying

 

"INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE"

 

Help!

Well duh. The old install has no information for your new motherboard and cannot initialize it. You'll have to reinstall. ;D

I thought Windows 2000 was better than 98. Windows 98 works and detects the devices on first bootup...

I'm not saying 2K is better [because that is relative] or not, but I've had the same problem, and the solution was to reinstall.

I have NEVER heard of a switch of an OS between motherboards that ever worked out. Windows 2000 will not work at all if you switch motherboards on it. I've tried it, and it does not work. You MUST reinstall 2000. Win2k has no way of knowing that you switched mobos on it, and will try to load the drivers for the old board, and it's usually at the IDE drivers that it crashes. Safe mode won't work, either (I still can't figure out why it's called "Safe", since it loads just about every driver anyway, including USB, which in my case was causing the crash itself). Win98 sometimes works between different motherboards, but if you look at the device manager in safe mode, don't be surprised to see a cute mess in there.

 

It doesn't seem like you should even be using 2000, but the directive is as follows:

 

Thou shalt reinstall Windows 2000.

I have done this and got it to work, but I recommend a re-install.

 

Boot from the W2k CD and do a repair, this will make W2k recognize the new hardware. However your system may not be to stable, but it will boot. A re-install is always the best solution when changing motherboards.
