IE 5.5 history and *.dmp files?

Recommended Posts

When I delete my temporary internet files I still get certain web sites in the url bar that will pop up when I'm typing in urls that start with the same letter. I've deleted all my temporary internet files and history. I've deleted all of my cookies. It still comes up and it's a little bit annoying as well. I am wondering where windows hides this stuff. Also I found a file called USER.DMP that seemed to contain info about websites I've visited. It was 45 megs in size! I deleted it a couple days ago. Today I searched for the file and it was back only this time it was 32 megs in size! what gives?

Don't know where they're stored, but here's how to clean 'em:

Tools > Internet Options > General [tab] > History [section] > Clear History [button];

And

Tools > Internet Options > Content [tab] > Personal information [section] > Autocomplete [button] > Web addresses [checkbox];

USER.DMP is a memory dump file created by Dr. Watson when a user mode component fails. You can control what gets written to the file by running drwtsn32 in the Run dialog. You can also control where the memory dump is written.

If this is happening frequently, you should look in your Event Viewer to see if you find any error messages in the System or Applications tabs. Those might help you find out what's failing and why, so that you can fix it.

The typed URL history behavior can be controlled by registry edit or by using a "tweaker" like TweakUI 1.33 (freely downloadable from Microsoft).

Regards,

Jim
