Pablo Rubianes writes that the LoCo Council are being faced with the

task of replacing three of the current Council members and asks for

volunteers to step forward and nominate themselves or another

contributor for the three open positions. Pablo lists the requirements

for nominees, how to apply and advises the dates that nominations will

open and close.

Jono Bacon writes "I want to re-energize our LoCo community to bring

out the best in our wider community and to open doors to more and more

people who can be touched by Ubuntu." Jono says that there is a need

for people who are willing to make change happen in a practical way

and adds that he wants to encourage those who are willing to commit

the time and effort to bring change to LoCo Teams to apply to join the

LoCo Council.

=== Nicholas Skaggs: Call for Testing: Mir with multi-monitor ===

 

Nicholas Skaggs writes that Mir is one of the biggest changes in 13.10

and they now need testers to test the multi-monitor support. Skaggs

reminds us that with Feature Freeze coming next week testing needs to

be ramped up and there is a ppa and a wiki to help explain what is

needed.

=== Jono Bacon: Ubuntu in a nutshell: Unity and Convergence ===

 

Jono Bacon goes over the history of Unity. He states that Unity has

been designed with an emphasis on scalability, with design conforming

to all sorts of form factors. With Unity 8, present in Ubuntu phone

and tablets, he believes that Unity has come a step closer to "true

convergence." He also assures us that while the next Unity seem

primed for mobile devices, Unity on the desktop is also at work.

=== David Henningsson: Ubuntu Touch audio stack for 13.10 release ===

 

In his blog David Henningsson talks about the future of the Ubuntu

Touch audio stack. Android's AudioFlinger had been used for playing

back and recording audio. Starting with a recent build nightly

release will talking directly from PulseAudio to ALSA, or the Android

audio HAL when necessary. This means new work for porters.

=== Alan Pope: Core Apps Hack Days Part 2 ===

 

Alan Pope announces a second round of Hack Days to occur the 2nd and

9th of September from 09:00 UTC to 21:00 UTC. Pope writes that as

Ubuntu Touch 13.10 is due to be released in October the need to get

core functionality across all core apps production-quality by the

release date is essential. Apps will be paired each day to get

through all 12 in half the time. This will also give participants a

choice of which app to work on.

=== Thomas Voss: Mir & XMir Performance ===

 

In an article in a series of blog posts on Mir's and XMir's

performance by Thomas Voss he addresses performance, bottlenecks, and

how the team is addressing them. Voss reports that a system-level

compositor impacts graphical performance by adding another additional

layer between the GPU and the actual rendering process but there are

ways to avoid most of the overhead.
