added 256 megs of ram now computer periodiclly reboots

After adding 256 megs of PC133RAM with my 128mPC100 my computer will reboot spontaneuosly, i have crash dumps disabled so i dont get the blue screen when it would dump the memory. Anyway I just want to know if there is a solution to this problem at all that anyone knows of.

 

System specs:

Asus P2B - BIOS 1.0.1.2

PII 400

Windows 2k

SB Live

Generic NIC

GF 2 MX

the ram is 128PC100 generic and 256 Kingston PC133 ValueRAM.

Spontaneuosly reboots are usually due to ram failure.

Maybe the RAM chip is broken.

damn that sucks. Anyway to test the chip to see if it is failing or not. Maybe that is why they offloaded it for so cheap.

Why don't you give Kingston a call all of their ram has a lifetime warranty and the will even ship a replacement overnight at no extra charge. All you have to pay is return shipping.

well i will tell u right now, it is not good to mix pc 133 and pc 100 mem that is prob why(works for some people but not for others), take out your pc 100 128mb chip, try it like that (just your 256) for a while, see if it crashes, if not, then u knwo what the prob is.

I have an ASUS P3B-F that gives me the same issue when I put memory in the 4th slot. It's just a bad slot in my case, but it could be something to look at as well.

Agreed. Mixing memory speeds isn't a good idea. The chip could also be faulty as suggested above, and to test it, you can use a program such as MemTest86, which can be found here...

Well... take out you PC100 ram and just run the system with PC133 and see if it reboots, if it does then it is RAM fault, if it doesn't move the PC133 to the 1st raw(s) and put the PC100 in the last, maybe the slots a defective.

thanks for the replys peoeple i guess this board still can get things done when needed I was told that mixing PC100 and PC133 wasnt a big deal guess i was wrong. I will try everything you suggested and report back. Thanks again everyone.

Well its not usually a big deal (I have mixed them, but they run off cource on 100MHz). But you might have been unlucky. If you have a AMD type chipset they are usually more picky about ram, and rpobably more picky about mixing ram also.

I have mixed them running at 133, and not had problems. Then again, a cheap stick of PC100 may have a hard enough time running at 100, let alone anything else. All you are doing is overclocking the RAM, so most of the typical CPU overclocking rules apply.

actually, with a pII 400, he's underclocking the PC133. I've got mixed RAM in my system and I have no problems at all (2*PC100 128mb, 1*PC133 128mb, Aopen ax6bc pro gold, pIII 700). Did you try that memory tester yet?

Ive underclocked RAM in a PC133 P3 667 and had PC100 and PC133 in my Duron system and it worked fine. You only need to worry if youre overclocking. That memory is probably bad or that generic ram could be your problem and not like the Kingston. Take out your old memory and see how things go. If that fixes it, your DIMMs dont like each other. I had some generic memory in one of my systems but it went screwy on me,but this was just one stick. Ive had other sticks of generic memory with no problems. There's a very small chance the RAM is actually bad, especially if its coming from a manufacturer like Kingston. Its probably due to some differences in the specs of the chips themselves-but not the speed.

I took out my PC100 chip and now everything is fine. The PC100 chip was made before PC133 was even in existence so it was probably not compatible with the PC133 chip i put in. I havent had a problem at all after taking out the PC100.

& put the 128 in frist dimm slot follow be 256 what this will do it make PC133 run at PC100.

Most of 128 PC100 don't like run 3-2-3 win add more memory.

its not a big deal anymore i just sold the 128 to my friend for 50 bucks since he needed some more RAM. So now i just have 256 instead of 384 no big deal i don't notice the diff.
