Dual botting w/ 2 OS's and 2 HD's??

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have win2k installed and running great but I also have a HD running Win98SE. At the moment i am having to swap between the two when i want to play a game. After searching the NET and found i could edit the boot.ini as following (win2k HD is Primary/Master, win98 has been put as slave)

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Whistler Professional"

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Millenium"

Now the menu appears OK and if i select win2k it all loads great but if i select win98SE it says something kernal is not present and win2k cannot start, How????? help?

cheers

for the win9x series os's (including WinME, i think), you have to set the boot directory to the root of the drive.... so your last line should read:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\="Microsoft Windows Millenium"

The ME line should be set to the drive it is installed on. So if you have it installed on C:, it should be:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)C:\="Microsoft Windows Millenium"

At least, I think that's correct. It's been a while since I've done a dual-boot.

here is my boot.ini i have win me on c: win2k on d: and Whistler on e:

[boot loader]

timeout=5

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Whistler Professional" /fastdetect

C:\="Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition"

as you can see to boot win me you don't need all that arc path crap that nt needs you just need to specify the root. The only problem that i can see here is that win98 thinks it is installed on c: if you have been using the drive as master. when you have it set as slave it will be d: and win98 might be a little pissed about that but that is only hypothetical i have never tried it so i don't know. Also your win2k partition must be fat32 or win98 will not boot.

The best way to do this is to install Windows Me on the second hard drive, then install Win2k on the first partition. Under Win2k you can set up the computer to display a list of OS's for a certain length of time before it boots the default OS which you can set. You could also try the Win2k repair option too.

IF you decide to do a clean install, follow the sequence I gave earlier, Win2k should automatically set the default time till it boots into Win2k for 30 seconds. To change the default time and OS right click on my computer, go to properties,click the advanced tab and go to the startup and recovery option, then set it up to your liking. I have a test computer that I try stuff on, and I got this out of a Win2k IT resource book. They say to install Win9x first then Win2k.

Try running the repair option first, it works on 98, so it should work on 2000.

Good luck
