Win2K --> Win98 T100 Networking Troubles

Recommended Posts

Hi all, i am new to this so please bare with me. I have been through all the previous networking messages but unfortunately nothing has been said to help me out?....

I have an 8 port Switch, running CAT5 cables to 3 computers (2 Win98 and 1 Win2k) All 3 computers are using Accton EN1207D Cards. All three boxes utilised the switch perfectly when they were all in Win 98, however, now that i have installed Win2K My box is just not being accepted over the network. The 2 Win98 machines work fine and can ping eachother...they CANNOT ping the win2K Box, as it cannot ping them.

I am using TCP/IP protocol on all machines and i have tried countless efforts of configuration setup for the win2K machine but nothing seems to work.

IP Addresses are : 203.32.4.1 (2,3)

Subnet : 255.255.255.0

Win2K Had its own drivers for the network card...i have tried them, and the same drivers the win98 boxes are running...still nothing...

Somebody's gotta help me...i can't survive without this network...and by reading all your messages...it is obviously possible to get a successful config....what am doing wrong???

(by the way...i know how to set up the user accounts...thats not the problem...its that the win2k machine cannot access win98 and vice a versa)

Thanks,

Zap

Several questions.

Are there any link status lights on the w2K card or on the switch - do they show "good"?

Have you tried the board diagnostics (if any)?

Have you tried manually configuring the cards connect parms (100Mb/FD) instead of using "auto"?

Why using 203.32.4.* instead of the usual 192.168.0.*?

Are you pinging by host name or by IP address? Have you updated the W2K "hosts" file with the names of the W9x machines?

I assumed that would be the gateway so i already tried it...same on all machines....Damn this network....i think i might have do install win 98 on my second drive so i can have a dual boot and then just jump into win98 every time i need to access the network...how annoying!!!!

Cables are fine, switch is fine...everythings fine...nothing is working :-(

any last suggestions...what about the WINS tab...what is that for...is it necessary?
