Dapper Dan 0 Posted December 30, 2003 It sounds like X windows is not wanting to work for you. This exact problem was the first in a series which made me ultimately reject Mandrake 9.2 in favor of RH 9. What vid card are you using? Did you have "GUI" desktop environment before? If so, what do you think you might have done to cause this to occur? Are you getting any errors about user id or password? As root, run XFdrake (not sure if caps are in the actual command or not), and try to reconfigure from there.. edit: does it do this with other desktop environments? KDE? Gnome? IceWM? Can you get it to go into Failsafe? Share this post Link to post
1mancan2 0 Posted December 30, 2003 the error i was getting logging into KDE was "can not access .ICEauthority in dir home/1man". i logged in the console as root, and loaded kde just fine using the command KDE, and i reset the permissions for .ICEauthority to 776 (is that not good to do for security reasons?). i rebooted and it loaded KDE under my usrename just fine. Dapper Dan 0 Posted December 30, 2003 This is great news! Whew! Actually, I get that same error in RH 9 on the rare occaisions I log in with KDE. I've never found a satisfactory solution for it. Since I use IceWM 99% of the time, it's not a problem. I don't know if it will present any security issues that need addressing. If you find answers about that, please let me know..
